JAIN TIRTHANKARA
This
is a stone statue of the 24th Jain Tirthankara of Gupta period 5th
century A.D. found from Mathura. This image of Mahavir Swamy is made in the
typical Buddhist and Jain style of the Kushana period. Tirthankara seated in
vajraparyankasana mudra, with closed eyes appears to be in meditation on a
square platform which is decorated with human and animal figures with a wheel
in the center.
This platform is shown surrounded by scared things. The wide
hallo around the head of Tirthankara is also decorated with a floral design. The artist of this masterpiece is also unknown. Now it is a collection of State
Museum, Lucknow.
