MAR VIJAYA SCULPTURE

MAR VIJAYA (SCULPTURE) AJANTA Cave No. 26, Size: 12' X 10'

Mar Vijaya is a famous relief sculpture of 5th century A.D., carved on the wall of Ajanta
cave no. 26. The size of the relief sculpture is 12' X 10'. This grand cave is famous as Chaitya
cave with dimensions of 61' X 36' X 31' and was used for worshipping and practicing meditation.
In the center of this cave is a statue of Lord Buddha sitting on a lotus.

The meaning of the word Mar Vijaya is victory on Kamadeva, the god of worldly attraction.
This sculpture reveals that Ajanta artists were not only masters in portraying female figures but were equally capable of portraying human emotions with fine elegance. In this famous and large-sized relief sculpture, Lord Buddha is shown in the center and practicing austerity. His facial expression is full of divine peace and bliss. Mara (Kamadeva) is shown on an elephant along with his demon army. This army surrounds Lord Buddha and includes ugly and beautiful faces of women. The main aim of this army is to distract Lord Buddha from the meditation. The loveliest women of this army tempting Buddha by dance and music are shown in the foreground of the sculpture. Finally, the failure of Mara and his army has been depicted by the sculpture of defeated Mara standing in the bottom right corner. The artist portrayed successfully the expressions of peace and self-realization on the face of Lord Buddha. The name of the artist of this beautiful sculpture is not known.
