CHAURI BEARER OR YAKSHINI

CHAURI BEARER OR YAKSHINI

The chauri bearer or yakshini was found at Didarganj, Patna, capital of Bihar. This sculpture seems to be of 300 B.C. and it is carved out of 162.5 cm high single buff coloured polished sandstone. There is a clear impact of Mauryan style on it. This is the first monumental life-size female sculpture with the appearance of heavy and strong muscles as the special features of the statue. This is half nude, massive, free-standing sculptures looking front with all slight forward inclination.

The body is sensitively modeled with all parts rounded and finished, particularly the eyes, chin, and abdomen. In the lower part of her body, she wears dhoti. The garment clings like a wet cloth and the tight girdle tightens the cloth against the hips. One end of the dhoti is drawn between the legs and ending up on the back but the edge falling over the feet. The other edge hangs loose, ending in a large knot.

Her forehead is decorated with a beautiful crest-jewel. Heavy kundals add beauty to her face. A long necklace hangs rhythmically on her round and heavy breast which curved down to her narrow waist. She wears many bangles on her hands. The board hips taper gradually to her slim ankle, which is decorated with heavy ornaments. The chauri is visible in her right hand which gradually denotes that she is the attendant of God Kuber. There are very few sculptures in Indian art the surpass their beauty. Now it is a collection of State Museum, Patna.
