BODHISATTVA HEAD FROM TAXILA
This is an extraordinary work of slatish stone from Taxila in Gandhara style in the 2nd century A.D. It is a unique example of fusion of Indian and Greek motifs of sculptures. This combination differs Gandhara from other schools of art but unfortunately, the artist of this masterpiece is not identified. The Greek typeface of the Boddhisatva has charming innocence and thick hair also bears mustaches. His head carries a special type of turban which is decorated with jewels.
The sharp eyebrows and half-closed
gentle eyes make this sculpture lively. These features depict the Greek kind of
face but the expressions on the face are typically Indian. This sculpture gives
an idea that experimental work dominated at that time.
