QUTAB MINAR, DELHI
Qutab Minar, one of the most renowned monuments of India, situated in Mehrauli about 18 km from Delhi, is the highest red and buff sandstone tower having 379 steps and a remarkable height of 72.5 meters.
The founder of the slave dynasty Qutb-ud-din Aibak started the construction of the grand Minar in order to proclaim to the world the gigantism of Islam. But unfortunately, he died even before the start of the construction of the second story, and later on, it was completed by his successor Illtutmish.
The circular tower has a base diameter of 13.20 meters which gradually decreases with its height and becomes about 3 meters at the top. Its entrance door faces north. The most artistic feature of the minar is its four diminishing stories, each fringed with a projecting balcony and its support. Its entire architecture is of Islamic origin.
