SEATED BUDDHA FROM SARNATH

 SEATED BUDDHA FROM SARNATH

It is the most attractive and beautiful work of Gupta sculpture of 5th century A.D. in buff-colored sandstone. In this sculpture Buddha is preaching the first sermon. He is seated in Dharm-Chakra parivartan mudra in padmasana. It illustrates a metaphorical charming face with finely carved bow-like eyebrows and lotus-shaped eyes on a perfectly oval face.

The ear lobes are long and half-closed eyes reflect the spiritual calm and serene expressions. This spiritual expression is the characteristic of all Budhha images of the Gupta period. He wears a gown which is made obvious only by the lines at the neck, wrist, and ankles. The ear slave represents the throne, also decorated on both sides. It carries a circular halo decorated with floral motifs between the two rows of pearls and has a flying Gandharva on each side. Curly hair ringlet and usnisa are beautifully designed.
