GOL GUMBAJ, BIJAPUR
Bijapur is situated in Karnataka state. Once it was famous as the capital of the powerful Muslim dynasty in the 16th century. Now it is famous for being one of the finest buildings constructed at that time. This finest building is the mausoleum of Sultan Muhammad Adil Shah (1627-57) popularly known as Gol Gumbaj.
Gol Gumbaj is covering a total interior surface area of over 1600 square meters. It is built on a platform of 183 square meters and has at each corner seven-story high octagonal towers. Architecturally, it is a simple construction, its underground walls consisting of a square grave chamber. It has an enormous round dome at the center which is 38 meters in diameter and is the world's largest dome. Each of its walls on the outside is divided into 3 recessed arches, the central one paneled with a running bracket supported 'Chhazza' at the cornice. 3.4 mts wide gallery, rests on its interior at the level of drum. It is known as the whispering gallery, from the fact that even a whisper here reverberates, through an echo under the dome. Among the visitors, it is famous for its whispering gallery and multiple echoes.
